The kitchen is the hub of your home.
It’s where you enjoy your meals, the kids do their homework, conversations are had, and party guests congregate.
It’s an important room and if you’ve been thinking about giving yours an upgrade you’ve landed on the right blog post.
We’re sharing three ideas that are simple in nature but can make a big difference in breathing new life into your kitchen.
Three Ideas to Upgrade Your Kitchen
Paint the Cabinets
A good place to start when updating your kitchen is your cabinets.
Rather than getting rid of what you currently have, consider painting them to enhance the overall look of your kitchen.
Before you buy the paint and put on your painting clothes, you’ll want to consider the following:
- Temper your expectations – If you’re looking for a smooth look but your cabinets have visible open grain, they’ll show through. These grooves can be more evident as the paint dries. However, if you want to create a smooth finish on your cabinets, you could fill the grain with putty. Be aware this task is time consuming and challenging to create a uniform look.
- Deep clean the surface – To thoroughly clean the surface of your cabinets you’ll need to use a grease remover. Follow the instructions on the grease-cutting solution of your choice and make sure to rinse your cabinets and drawers with clean water and wipe them dry with a clean rag before painting.
- Label your drawers and cabinets – Though you might think you’ll remember where each drawer and cabinet goes, err on the side of caution and label each piece. Doing so will take the stress out of having to play a guessing game when it comes time to put them back on. And, don’t forget to keep the screws and hinges in a safe place too. We recommend storing them in a Ziploc bag and taping it to the back of the cabinet or drawer they belong to.
- Sand the surface – Even if you think your cabinets are in perfect condition, you cannot skip the sanding step. Sanding the faces of your cabinets and drawers will help the paint stick. Use 150 to 200 grit sandpaper and give it a good buff. But, be cautious not to go down to the bare wood.
Tip: Once you’ve painted your cabinets consider swapping out the current hardware with a selection that matches the overall style you’re going for. Something as simple as updating the cabinet hardware can transform the look and feel of your kitchen.
Install Backsplash
If your kitchen feels flat, you can add texture and a focal point by installing backsplash.
From tin tiles which are great for reflecting light and making the kitchen feel bigger to glass tiles that are easy to clean and mold resistant, there are plenty of options to choose from.
When choosing the style and design of backsplash for your kitchen, be sure to inquire about the wear and tear each material can withstand. You want to make sure you choose a style that you like but will also last in your kitchen with little to no problems.
Update Window Furnishings
No matter the style of your space, proper window treatments can act as the finishing touch that ties the overall look of your kitchen together.
Custom wooden window shutters for example provide a variety of benefits including but not limited to:
Versatility – Unlike other window treatments, custom wood shutters can be designed to fit any window no matter the shape and size.
Energy Saver – Our precision shutters keep out the cold and heat by adding extra insulation to your windows which saves you money on your energy bills.
Ambience – Plantation shutters are a fantastic option if you want extra control of the lighting in your kitchen thanks to the tilt-rod that moves the slats up and down with ease.
While there are plenty of additional upgrades you can make to your kitchen, these three ideas will make a big difference in your home.
