A simple search on Google or a scroll through Instagram can lead you to thousands of ideas to decorate your baby’s nursery.
Truthfully, it can be overwhelming.
But, there are some design basics you’ll want to know about to make things a little easier.
In this blog, we’ve covered four of them.
Pick a Theme
Picking a theme might be the hardest step. The theme you pick determines the accents, furniture, and decor of the room.
Though there isn’t a proven science of picking a theme for a baby nursery, here are a couple of tips to consider:
- Start with the color palette – Choosing a color scheme for the nursery can help narrow your focus on the theme. Find commonalities between the color palette and furniture you have your eye on to see if a theme works well with both.
- Inspiration – Maybe you’ve been given a beautiful vintage crib or nostalgic mobile from when you were a baby? Whatever the case may be, look to certain pieces for theme inspiration. As we mentioned before, there’s no shortage of ideas on the internet. So try and find a singular piece for inspiration that you can build the theme around.
Focus on Furniture
Crib. Changing table. Rocking chair. These are a few essential pieces of furniture and once you decide where they’ll go in the room, you can begin to intersperse some additional pieces in the space such as a bookshelf, toy storage solutions, and more.
A tip to consider when choosing furniture is to make sure it grows with them. Meaning, when choosing nursery furniture, think ahead. Can the changing table double as a dresser down the line? Can you easily swap the crib out for a toddler-sized bed? Though not immediate, it’s good to keep this in the back of your mind so you don’t run into too many design problems later.
Proper Lighting
Picture this. It’s 2 a.m. and your baby’s crying. You roll out of bed, walk down the hall to the nursery and groggily stumble to find the light switch. When you do find it, the light turns on and it’s as bright as the noonday sun. Both you and your baby are startled and wide awake.
That doesn’t sound like an ideal situation.
To avoid this instance and have control over the light, install a dimmer on overhead fixtures and consider purchasing accent lamps to provide just enough light without overwhelming the situation.
Dress the Windows
Light is great during a baby’s wake windows and helps regulate their circadian rhythm, but if light sneaks in during their nap time and wakes them up, yikes. You’ll be one unhappy parent. Our custom wood shutters not only provide an aesthetically pleasing look in your baby’s nursery but they control how much light comes in and how much light stays out.
No matter the theme or color scheme, the end goal when designing your baby’s nursery is to create a comfortable space that sets the tone for restful naps and sweet playtime.
