We believe that being an environmentally responsible company is an indicator of our business success. As an industry leader, we are committed to leveraging our influence with our vendors, associates and customers to find new ways of responsibly reducing our environmental impact and to protect our customer’s and employees’ health.
Here’s What We Do:
-
Avalon’s wood shutters are finished with a water-based coating that contains zero VOCs. The most environmentally-friendly coating available today, it virtually eliminates hazardous air pollutants without sacrificing the durability and performance of solvent-based coatings. Our coatings have a “Class A” Flame Spread and Smoke Development Rating from SGS.
-
Avalon uses only certified sustainably grown and harvested Basswood; for each tree harvested, 2.3 to 6 more trees are planted. We purchase only from mills that meet the procurement provisions of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI®) Standard. The SFI standard promotes the long-term health of forests through responsible forest management practices Basswood shutters are recyclable, biodegradable and renewable.
-
All sawdust and wood shavings are recycled locally by for use by nurseries, farms, etc.
-
Our sophisticated manufacturing equipment, the Scanimation Optical Eye Optimizer, maximizes the yield from each board and allowed us to reduce our waste by 10%-15%%. Unusable wood knots and end cuts are ground up and recycled.
-
All metal paint & stain cans and shipping straps are recycled through American Metal Recycle.
-
Avalon participates in Edison’s “Critical Peak Program”. Production schedules are adjusted to allow more energy to be transferred to the grid during critical peak usage hours during summer months. This also allows Avalon to control costs.
-
Shutters provide excellent exceptional insulation from heat and cold which typically results in energy savings.
-
To reduce energy usage, our factory uses high-efficiency lighting and computer controlled systems that come on only when needed. Avalon’s dust collection and air compressors systems cycle on only needed. Blowers only run at speeds needed for the machines that are currently in operation
